This Ireland 5 Pound banknote from 1999 is part of the 1992-2001 Independence series. This family of notes has as its theme the formation of modern independent Ireland and was designed by Robert Ballagh. Its obverse side features the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin, the Irish harp coat of arms, and a portrait of Catherine McAuley. The reverse side features three children studying with books, the map of Europe, the Irish harp state emblem, and Irish text extracted from the poem Mise Raifteiri an File by Antoine O Raifteiri on the blackboard. The note is 120 x 64 mm and contains a windowed security thread and a Lady Lavery watermark to enhance its security features.
